Responsibility

As the world’s population increases, so too does its level of consumption. This means more waste is produced by both industry and consumers. Together, we must all contribute to a more sustainable future by decreasing the waste we generate and dispose of. We’re focusing on how we can reduce the waste associated with our product packaging and manufacturing processes in order to improve the sustainability of our products.

Products

Our packaging is essential to securely and safely contain our products. However, it’s a visible source of waste once the products have been used, so we’re making product packaging design better. For us, this means making more with less, saving resources and reducing emissions.

Our product developers are required to measure and manage packaging quantities and types using RB’s Sustainable Innovation Calculator.

Our approach to more sustainable product packaging involves:

  • Reducing packaging weight
  • Considering more sustainable materials
  • Increasing recyclability

As a result of our focus on improved packaging materials, 40% of the products in our pipeline now have less packaging than their predecessor. This has been accomplished by reducing the weight of our packaging, using more sustainable materials, and increasing the recyclability of our products.

Waste is an inevitable part of any manufacturing process; it’s how we manage it that makes the difference. We’re continuing to reduce waste generation in our manufacturing processes while we improve our recycling capabilities. We’re looking for alternative revenue streams and innovative disposal options to create increasingly sustainable waste output.

In 2016, waste consumption was reduced by 5.5% per unit of production over 2015. The commitment and effort of our sites worldwide has meant that we are close to achieving our 2020 goal – of 20% reduction in waste. However, we will not allow ourselves to lose focus of our commitment to continually reduce waste generation and improve recycling. To reinforce this, we are setting a revised target of a 30% reduction in waste by 2020 over the 2012 baseline.

We have continued to make significant progress with our landfill diversion programme; all but one site now send waste to landfill. The remaining facility have clearly defined plans in place to meet the target before 2020. We have continued to drive performance throughout the year and in December 2016 waste sent to landfill was reduced to less than 1% of total waste generated in 2016.

Wastewater treatment sludge is being turned into concrete blocks to build a recreation area for a local school.

Baddi, India

Dermi Cool talcum powder waste is being used as a raw material for the production of plastic granules, saving over £1,000 in raw materials and landfill costs.

Shanxi, China

Materials left over from the traditional medicine manufacturing process is now being turned into compost by an organic fertiliser producer.

Jammu Pest, India

Briquette ash is now being turned into building bricks by a local brick producer. After extensive testing of these bricks we found them to be safe for boundary wall construction.
