Moving away from home for the first time?
Here's a short checklist of essential items to help you settle in and on your way.
At least two passport-sized photos:
You might need them for college ID cards
Passport or driving licence:
Take good care of them, though
Government number/ National Insurance number/ Social Security Number or equivalent government identification
Laptop or notebook computer:
Much more easily transportable than a PC and means never having to queue for a free university computer. Just don't forget to insure it!
Room insurance:
Students and university properties are easy targets for thieves
Student account and bank account details:
Shop around as there are usually plenty of deals out there
Alarm clock:
You'll need to be ready for those early starts
A few recipes:
It's the best way to avoid a burger and pizza overload

These can help you keep track of assignments. If you've got a PDA or smartphone, set up a special calendar
TV licence:
If you live in the UK and are planning to have a TV in your room, you'll need one. Most universities, however, will have a communal area in halls of residence you can watch it in.
