Our goals and targets

Our sustainability strategy targets the global challenges of water scarcity and bringing more sustainable choices for health & hygiene – through the innovation that drives RB. Innovating to reduce carbon emissions across the lifecycle will also continue to be an important priority.

Our 2020 goals

Our functional priorities

Healthier Communities

  1. Deliver hygiene, sanitation, sexual health, and mosquito borne disease prevention programmes
  2. Deliver innovative products and programmes to tackle the causes of diarrhoea and test them in key markets
  3. Engaging employees

Better design

  1. More sustainable products, using the Sustainable Innovation Calculator to assess 100% of product innovations, focusing on chemicals, packaging, carbon and water
  2. 100% compliance with RB’s Restricted Substances List and committed to 100% transparency
  3. 100% responsibly-sourced natural raw materials

Better production

  1. Health, safety and social standards
    • Zero fatalities and serious accidents in all sites and continued reduction in lost work day accident rate
We achieved a 13% reduction in our lost working day accident rate since 2012. We have also introduced a total recordable frequency rate metric to ensure all safety incidents are investigated and improvements made.
    • 100% of manufacturing sites with certified EHS management systems
At the end of 2014, 87% of our manufacturing sites were certified to the environmental standard ISO 14001 and 91% to the safety management system OHSAS 18001.
    • 100% compliance with RB social standards
100% of third-party manufacturers included in RB’s social compliance programme.
  2. Environment
    • 35% reduction in water use (per unit) and meet minimum wastewater standards
Since 2012, we reduced water use by 25% per unit of production.
    • Zero waste to landfill and 10% reduction in waste (per unit)
Since 2012, we’ve gone from four to 35 sites achieving zero waste to landfill status – 74% of RB’s factories globally.
    • 35% reduction in energy consumption and 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (both per unit)
Energy per unit of production fell almost 13% since 2012, with carbon emissions per unit down by nearly 8%.
    • Net-zero emissions from manufacturing
Since 2006, we’ve planted 7,014,000 native trees in Canada to offset a total of 2.4 million tonnes of CO2. In 2014, we planted 864,000 trees.
