Our goals and targets

Our sustainability strategy targets the global challenges of water scarcity and bringing more sustainable choices for health & hygiene – through the innovation that drives RB. Innovating to reduce carbon emissions across the lifecycle will also continue to be an important theme.

The strategy will be delivered through innovating with better design and better production processes that will result in better choices for consumers.

We have set three key goals for 2020 and these goals are supported by specific targets and functional programmes, including compliance with RB’s social standards and Global Ingredient Guidelines, and zero waste to landfill.

Our 2020 goals

Our functional targets

Healthier Communities

  1. Partnering with Save the Children to deliver a vision of stopping diarrhoea being the world’s second biggest killer of children under five by 2020.
  2. Innovating products and behaviours to tackle the causes of diarrhoea and piloting these in key markets
  3. Developing brand-specific sustainability activities and ensuring consistent sustainability communications for 100% of Powerbrands
  4. 100% transparency on ingredients
  5. Engaging with employees about more sustainable behaviour and practices

Better design

  1. More sustainable products, using the Sustainable Innovation Calculator to assess all product innovations, focusing on chemicals, packaging, carbon and water
  2. 100% compliance with RB’s Global Ingredient Guidelines
  3. 100% responsibly-sourced natural raw materials

Better production

  1. Safety
    • Zero fatalities and serious accidents in all sites and continued reduction in lost work day accident rates
We achieved a 94% reduction in lost working day accident rates between 2001 and 2012.
    • 100% of manufacturing sites with certified EHS management systems
At the end of 2011, over half our manufacturing sites were certified to the environmental standard ISO 14001 and the safety management system OHSAS 18001. Our goal is for other sites to achieve certified management systems before 2015.
  2. Environment1
    • 10% improvement in water efficiency and meet minimum wastewater standards
Between 2000 and 2012, we reduced water use by 31% per unit of production
We are setting minimum standards for key wastewater parameters.
    • Zero waste to landfill and reduce waste intensity by 10%
Total waste from manufacturing reduced by 12% per unit of production between 2000 and 2012.
    • 35% energy intensity reduction and 40% greenhouse gas intensity reduction
Between 2000 and 2012, we reduced energy use by 49% and greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing by 51% per unit of production.
    • Continued reduction in logistics impact
We are working with our logistics partners to increase transport efficiencies.
    • Effectively carbon neutral manufacturing
We have been planting trees to effectively offset the greenhouse gas emissions from our manufacturing sites since 2006. We will continue to offset emissions from our manufacturing facilities through tree planting until 2014.
  3. Social responsibility
    • 100% compliance with RB social standards
We are partnering with Save the Children to deliver a vision of stopping diarrhoea from bring the world's second biggest killer of children under five by 2020.

1 Note that we will continue to measure environmental performance per unit of production, but also report absolute numbers where possible.

A winning partnership

In 2011, our partnership with Save the Children was awarded Gold for ‘Most effective long-term philanthropic scheme’ and Silver for ‘Best charity-centred sponsorship activity’ at the Corporate Engagement Awards in London.
