Our approach to Sustainability
Our strategy for more sustainable innovation responds to two huge global shifts where we can make the biggest difference: the changing needs of women and the growing scarcity of water.
Innovation
, because water, energy and other resources are constrained and the innovation that drives RB will deliver more sustainable products.
Women
, because they are central to our business purpose of healthier lives and happier homes and they are the majority of our consumers.
Water
, because by 2025, 64% of the world’s population will live in areas with significant shortages. And because 15 of our Powerbrands contain water, around half of them need water for use and all of them require water to produce.
"RB's new "betterbusiness" strategy builds on its Carbon20 commitment and has set itself a handful of lofty targets. It aims to reduce its carbon footprint per dose by a third across a product's lifecycle; to reduce the water impact per product across its lifecycle by a third, and to create a third of the company's total net revenue from sustainable products, by 2020."

RB joins The Sustainability Consortium
We joined
The Sustainability Consortium
in September 2012. We will work with the group and their members (including many of our peers and customers) on a common way to assess more sustainable innovations, in line with our lifecycle approach.
RB beats Carbon20 target
Our ambitious target was to reduce our products’ total carbon footprint – from raw materials to use and disposal – by 20% per Dose by 2020, compared to 2007. This is an average reduction of 1.5% per Dose each year.
In May 2012 we announced we had exceeded our 2020 target, with a 21% reduction in carbon emissions per Dose (excluding our SSL business). When the recently acquired SSL business is included this rises to 26%.
