Trees for Change - Project Update - Winter 2010 / Spring 2011
What have we done so far?
So far - as at the end of the 2010 planting season - we have planted more than 4.5 million native species trees at several sites across British Columbia, Canada.
The seedlings - mainly Interior Douglas-fir, White Spruce and Lodgepole Pine - were grown in local tree nurseries from locally-derived seed chosen to best fit with each planting site.
Since launching Trees for Change in 2006 we have extended the scope of the project several times. Our original aim was to offset the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from energy use at our global manufacturing facilities for two years (2006 and 2007); the current project will offset GHG emissions from our global manufacturing energy use for six years (2006 - 2011).*
What are we doing in 2011?
In spring 2011 (April and May) we shall be planting more than 1 million additional native species trees at our project sites in British Columbia, Canada.
2011's tree planting is - as in previous years - being carried out by local, Canadian companies. Further planting and some fill-planting will also take place in 2012 and 2013.

* - potentially excluding, subject to confirmation, some of the energy use at the manufacturing operations acquired with SSL International plc (SSL) in November 2010. To date (Q4 2010) all acquisitions of manufacturing facilities by Reckitt Benckiser (RB) since 1st January 2006 have been included in the Trees for Change project scope. However, until we have calculated the GHG emissions from energy use at the manufacturing facilities RB acquired with SSL in November 2010 we are not able to confirm the extent to which those additional 'SSL' emissions, which will largely occur in 2011, are covered by the current scope of the Trees for Change project. Trees for Change has always included a safety margin comprising some additional offsetting, such that we would be offsetting somewhat more CO2 than actually necessary; this means that at least some and possibly all of the 'SSL' emissions in 2011 will be offset by the project without any further expansion of its scope.
