India: creating opportunities for working children
Tue, 10 Apr 2012 13:37:06 +0000
It's estimated that there are as many as 60 million working children (under 14 years old) in India, with child domestic workers making up 20% of that. A great number of child domestic workers found in the cities have been trafficked from villages located in some of the poorest states, including West Bengal. To eradicate child domestic work and the trafficking of children for labour, Save the Children, in partnership with Reckitt Benckiser, is working with children, their families and communities in Kolkata and rural West Bengal.

Along with a group of fantastic Save the Children supporters, I got the chance to walk on the Olympic track, just four months before world’s best athletes gather in very same place to compete for the coveted Olympic Gold medal. This was all part of a very special fundraising event called Gold Challenge. In celebration of this year’s games in London, thousands of people have been taking on Olympic and Paralympic-themed challenges to raise money for charity.
India: Bringing hope to children in brick kilns
Thu, 05 Apr 2012 14:08:27 +0000
The brick kiln we went to today in Boalghata was twice the size as the one in Chowhata. The first thing I saw as we entered was the declaration that the brick kiln is child labour free - a huge achievement.
India: “We want books not bricks”
Tue, 03 Apr 2012 14:02:27 +0000
I'm in West Bengal, a major brick producing state. Around 160,000 migrant children work in the hundreds of unregulated, hazardous brick kilns in the area, with 4,000 more children arriving every year.
India: 30 Smiles

One week into the job and I have my first visit to a programme: a school for street children in Delhi. As I walked there, I was preparing myself for the heart-wrenching feeling I get everyday when I see so many children begging and ragpicking on the streets of Delhi.
Colombia: A partnership making a difference

I was given a guided tour of the Reckitt Benckiser Colombia factory today by Octavio. I finally saw how RB products are made and reviewed the improvements that have been made to the workplace environment.
Day 2: Healthcare in action in Colombia
Mon, 03 Oct 2011 17:14:13 +0000
In the morning, about ten of us bundled into a Save the Children minibus and headed off towards the neighbourhood of Comuna 18 on the outskirts of Cali — a city in western Colombia. I later found out that Comuna 18 had lost 12 children last year. A two-year-old and a four-year-old were shot in gang warfare. Ten children died from preventable diseases. The reality of the situation that children and families face every day was becoming apparent.

Feeling the tropical heat meant that I had finally arrived in Cali, which has a much warmer climate than Bogota the capital.
